Come in and say hello
The best tiny bakery and coffee shop in Whitley Bay
The Sustenance Society aims to celebrate real ingredients, the process of making food, and the people that are involved, in other words the sustenance of our society.
We are a tiny Micro Bakery situated in the heart of Whitley Bay. We love-love-love our community and our biggest aspiration is to offer our friends and customers high quality, highly nutritious bread and pastries. We also like offering a place to gather, with a cup of coffee, in an atmosphere that embraces the process of making.
What we stand for at The Sustenance Society:
β We believe that what is good for the Planet is good for us. We will never compromise on the quality and provenance of our ingredients. We want real food, organic whenever possible, low carbon and zero mileage between production and retail.
β We know our social responsibilities. We believe in investing in our staff, offering training, fair pay, fair opportunities and a good and healthy environment to work in. At The Sustenance Society, we believe we should invest in people as much as we should invest in food.
β We value, so very much, your experience with us. We believe in the full transparency of the baking process, you can see us making what you eat. This creates an environment that embraces baking as an experience and creates a warm, friendly and smelling rather nice atmosphere for our customers.
I've been wanting to go to this lovely boutique bakery for such a long time, but I just couldn't find the time due to work. But this morning (7 March 2025), I finally made it there, and I'm so glad I did! I bought 10 of the delicious croissants, as well as different breads and other lovely products, to try out. Why did you buy 10 to test? I didn't want to go empty-handed to my friends at work, so I did. π
I'll let you in on a secret: from the first bite of the croissant, all I could say was 'oh my god'. I mean, a croissant can only be made so perfect, right? After eating the croissant, I thought to myself, "What were the other croissants we've eaten so far?"
It's not oily like the standard croissants you eat, and it doesn't melt in your mouth straight away. The base was slightly overcooked, but the slightly burnt flavour made it perfect.
I really want to describe it, but I just can't find the words. It was the most perfect croissant I've ever tasted. I don't know who the owner, the producer, the master is, but I want to say thank you and thank you.
I would highly recommend you give this place a try.
Prices very reasonable - shame itβs not open for half the week.
